WATER LOSS PROTECTION

$1.30/MONTH – water loss protection from excess water charges resulting from eligible plumbing leaks, up to $500. No deductible. Call (855)883-0441 to decline coverage.

GARBAGE PICKUP

Residential garbage pickup is each Thursday morning curbside. You are allowed up to 4 thirty-two-gallon bags or cans. When you sign up for residential electric and/or water service, you are automatically signed up for garbage pickup and charged $22.16 per month on your utility bill. This amount is for garbage service and assessment for the Cherokee County Landfill. A Black 96-gallon garbage container with wheels is available for $2.40 per month. This is a rental and is maintained by the garbage hauler.

RECYCLE TRAILERS

Two recycle trailers are available for you to drop off your recyclables.  (plastics, glass, and metals).  Locations are at City Park and by the school football field.  If one compartment is full, you may use another one.  There is no need to bag your recycling; however, if bags are used they should be a clear or see-through plastic bag. There is no need to remove labels or bands from cans and bottles. Clean only enough to prevent odors.  A Purple Glass Recycling Dumpster is next to white recycling trailers and clearly marked “FOR GLASS ONLY”!  No plastic bags or cardboard”. Plastic bags and cardboard can be placed in the other recycling containers. There is also a trailer for newspapers and a trailer for cardboard by the city park.

YARD WASTE PICKUP & CITY-WIDE CLEAN-UP

The City provides a yard waste (grass, leaves and tree or hedge trimmings) pickup the first Wednesday of each month, April through November in the alley. Yard waste must be in a biodegradable paper bag or box and cannot exceed six inches in diameter or four feet in length and must be boxed, bundled or tied (no wire or plastic ties). Additionally, a CITY-WIDE CLEANUP DAY is offered on the third Thursday in May, July, and October. White goods will be picked up at no cost; you must call City Hall to be put on a list for pickup.

SNOW PARKING ORDINANCE

During snow season (November 15 to April 1), parking is not allowed on residential streets for a period of time longer than thirty (30) minutes between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.; or in the business district between the hours of 2:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. if there is any accumulation of snow on the ground or blowing snow that requires the City to use snow removal equipment. Violators will be fined and towed at the owner’s expense.

LICENSING DOGS & CATS

All dogs over six months old and cats over four months old must be licensed with the City of Aurelia. To purchase or renew a license, you must provide proof of current rabies vaccination. Licenses must be renewed every year between January 1st and April 1st cost is $5.00. A penalty will be assessed if not renewed by April 1st. The City’s leash law applies to both dogs and cats. Dogs and cats running at large will be taken to a Cherokee veterinary clinic and the owner fined.

PIT BULL DOGS PROHIBITED

Keeping of Pit Bull Dogs are prohibited within the corporate limits of the City of Aurelia. “Pit Bull Dog” shall mean any dog over the age of six (6) months known by the owner to be a Pit Bull Terrier. Pit Bull Terrier shall mean any Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or American Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed of dog or any mixed breed of dog which contains, as an element of its breeding, the breed of Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or American Staffordshire Terrier so as to be identifiable as partially of the breed Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or American Staffordshire Terrier.

LIMITATION ON NUMBER OF DOMESTIC ANIMALS

No household shall maintain more than three (3) separate or combination of three domestic animals together with litters there from up to the age of six (6) months. No person shall harbor or maintain such a number of animals as to create unhealthful or unsanitary conditions for the humans or animals occupying the premises or create any other conditions constituting a nuisance.

BUILDING PERMITS

Building permits are required for new construction or any remodeling which changes the structure; including fences, decks, sheds and garages. Applications are available at the City Clerk’s office. Cost of permit is $25.00 up to first $20,000 valuation.  Over $20,000 valuation, $1.00 per $1,000 above that. Call Iowa One Call at 811 or 1-800-225-4532 before any digging.

RENT SHELTER HOUSE

The shelter house in the City Park has two sides for rent; east side $50 with a $50 deposit and west side $25. For information or to make reservations call City Hall at 712-434-2025.

COMMUNITY CENTER

The Community Center is  available for rent, whole facility $325 w/bar. Large room $150, small room $75. For information or to make reservations call City Hall at 712-434-2025.

MOWING GRASS, TRIM TREES, JUNK VEHICLES

Grass must not exceed 12 inches in height and mowing grass into the streets is prohibited. Tree branches overhanging the sidewalk are to be trimmed to 8 feet; branches overhanging a street or alley are to be trimmed to 15 feet above the surface of the roadway. Junk or unlicensed vehicles are not allowed within the city limits. Please check with City Hall for the definition of “junk vehicles”.

SNOW & ICE REMOVAL

City ordinances provide that each resident keep sidewalks and driveways free of snow and ice in the winter. Snow is not to be thrown into streets when cleaning sidewalks and drives unless the City has not yet opened the street.

TORNADO WARNINGS OR EMERGENCIES

During tornado warnings or other emergencies, a siren will blow for one (1) minute.

WEIGHT LIMIT ON CITY STREETS:

There is a three-ton weight limit on city streets. Heavy trucks and machinery are not permitted to be driven or parked on streets in residential areas unless making a delivery or if engaged in work.
